WHY OUR AWA MATTERS
The Utakura Awa is more than a waterway.
It is part of the whakapapa, history and wellbeing of our community. Flowing from Lake Ōmāpere towards the Hokianga Harbour, the awa connects our whenua, ecosystems and people.
UEG is working towards the long-term restoration and protection of the awa and its surrounding catchment — supporting healthier waterways, native biodiversity and a stronger culture of kaitiakitanga for generations to come.
OUR MAHI IN DEVELOPMENT
Restoring the Utakura Awa
UEG is developing a long-term restoration programme for the Utakura Awa and surrounding catchment.
Our initial focus includes willow management, identifying priority areas for restoration, seeking specialist environmental advice and developing an approach that supports the long-term health and resilience of the awa.
We are building the foundations for this mahi through assessment, planning, partnerships and community involvement — creating a restoration programme that can grow over time and deliver lasting results.
