PROJECTS - coming soon

UEG is developing practical, long-term environmental projects that support the restoration and protection of the Utakura Awa and surrounding catchment.

Our projects are designed to respond to the needs of the awa, build environmental knowledge and capability, involve our community and create lasting improvements to the health of our taiao.

As our restoration programme develops, this page will document our mahi, partnerships and progress.

PROJECT ONE — UTAKURA AWA RESTORATION & WILLOW MANAGEMENT

UEG is developing a planned programme to address areas of the Utakura Awa affected by willows and other invasive vegetation.

Our first stage will focus on identifying priority areas, understanding access and river conditions, seeking appropriate technical advice and determining suitable restoration methods.

STATUS: Planning & Development.

PROJECT TWO  - RIPARIAN RESTORATION & NATIVE PLANTING

Restoring the margins of our awa

UEG is developing a riparian restoration program to support the long-term recovery of priority areas along the Utakura Awa.

As areas are assessed and prepared, restoration may include appropriate native planting to strengthen riparian margins, improve habitat and support the health and resilience of the awa.

Planting will be planned carefully so that species and restoration methods are appropriate for each site and complement other work undertaken within the catchment.

STATUS: Planning & Development

PROJECT THREE —AWA MONITORING & ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATIONS HUB

Building a home for our environmental mahi

UEG is developing an Awa Monitoring & Environmental Operations Hub beside the Utakura Awa to provide a permanent base for our environmental restoration activities.

The proposed hub will provide space for project planning and administration, environmental records, small hui and volunteer coordination, together with secure storage for PPE, tools, planting equipment and other resources needed for our mahi.

The project is currently in the planning and costing stage, including site planning, infrastructure requirements, funding and potential community and business partnerships.
